Falling Back

Heh. 'Run Away' was probably the first song that made me crave more more MORE!!! when I was a kid.

Anyway, happy 1500 views for me- I still think I account for half of those on my own though.

I regret to inform whatever sparse readers I have collected that until the new Year, HMSS will be on hiatus. School Work and my inability to put together my own schedule has virtually ruined me- which is why you haven't seen an update in the past four months.

As such, here is what to expect once 2008 arrives.

I will be combing over the 15 chapters of Starting Points that I did complete and more or less 'Re-Mastering' them to better match my current level of writing. I expect myself to wrap that up by April at the latest. At which point I will finish off the story and move onward.

OTHER PROJECTS I MAY OR MAY NOT GET TO:

Earthbound- Inner Melodies
-Basically a oneshot set in the game, an interlude in Summers.
Present Status: 43% Complete

Star Trek TOS- The Galloway Chronicles
-Sort of a challenge for me. I had read that one of the recurring actors, David L. Ross (Lieutenants Galloway and Johnson) was once offered a part-time role as the Security Chief on the Enterprise. He declined, not interested in so much acting. Basically, this collection of stories will answer the question; What if he had?

Writing 'Fringe'

This is going to sound mostly unorganized- because it is.

Anyway, I happen to have some considerable experience writing 'Fringe' material as far as fanfiction is concerned. For instance, from 2000 and onwards my primary writing work was based on a cartoon called Cats Don't Dance, one of many lesser known toons. Good film, pulls the strings in several places. The fan community for CDD has always been small, and for a good time, I was the king of CDD fanfic. Heck, I'm very sure i'm the only author in FF.net that has CDD fics. You can't get more fringe than that- as the reviews of my works atest.

His Majesty's Secret Service is also a 'Fringe' piece of work. Granted, this takes place in the Sonic Universe, one of the larger and more rabid fanbases, so it's a large step up from my previous position.

The characters on the otherhand, have nowhere near the following as the big batters from SEGA or even those from SatAM. For example, i'll be discussing Geoffrey St. John and Hershey as prime examples of writing 'Fringe'.

First, the information:

Geoffrey St. John first appeared in issue 20 of the Archie Comic, showcasing his first major role shortly after in the Princess Sally miniseries. Any fans he may have accumulated had to wait until Issue 31 to see him again. By Issue 41 he started getting a more frequent role in the comic, only to suffer a personality change and be downgraded to a C-Level player; fight a little, contribute little to the plots. Basically, he was portrayed as a jerk with very little plot development, even in the Forbidden Zone arc during Knuckles 19-21 where he would've discovered the fate of his father. The low point- like many other low points- occured during the 90's issues, where he became manipulative while never discovering his motivations. By 102 he ceased to be a frequent character. 118 paired him with Hershey and he helped discover Elias in 121. 130 saw him married at gunpoint and since the Home arc he's been nonexistant.

As discarded as Geoff was, he's lightyears more developed than Hershey ever was. Quite literally she was turned into a Plot Twist during the Endgame arc, which almost felt like a cheap ploy. Even after then she was used very sparingly, taking on a very fringe role in the background. Even being enlisted in the Secret Service netted her only one solo story and only a handful of times that she could play off of anybody, much less develop a concrete sense of character. Heart to Heart paired her with Geoffrey, but it required the reader to have created and maintained an emotional interest in Hershey to even get drawn into her declarations. All she got in the Home arc was a marriage, a new hairstyle, and a new combat suit.

At first glance, writing for such thinly defined characters seems much easier than writing for firmly established characters who have plenty of stories and moment that you have to pay specific attention to. With Geoff and Hersh, you can essentially follow your own path as to how the characters behave. You can create their likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, habits, and even their personality without worries of going excessively Out of Character.

Unfortunately this is a double-edged sword, because this is YOU who has to fill in the many blanks in the tapestry that is these characters. This is a task as full of potholes and landmines as creating a 'run of the mill' Fan Character- which I have also done in this series- because there's nothing concrete to fall back on in order to make your writing effort easier. It all depends on you to make these characters believable and emotionally charged enough to make readers want more more MORE!

If you're going to write 'Fringe' characters, you not only have to know the few shards of personality that have shown through in the works they have appeared in, but you also have to be a strong enough writer to fill in the blanks and make them that much closer to natural. To that end, it's a very difficult job to do RIGHT.

One of those Heaven vs. Hell Debates...

I dunno why i'm even discussing this...

Anyway, a frequent spectacle on an infamous web site known as 4chan is called "Heaven Vs. Hell", and it's usually instigated by some anonymous /b/tard who will 'shop two unrelated characters together and demand to know which of them will come out on top in a fight. This seems to be where the Superman vs. Goku rage started, but i'm no judge of that, seeing as how I only discovered 4chan a year or so ago.

Anyway, a picture that occasionally pops up, especially in the /co/ board is a group fight between a few Marvel characters (Capt. America, the Hulk, and Thor) and some characters from the Justice Friends segments of Dexter's Laboratory (Major Glory, Krunk, and Val Halla)

Which one should you choose?

C'MON!! The answer is obvious!!!!

Let me summarize this in a way that anybody can understand. Let's say you run with the Justice Friends and you somehow manage to piss Krunk off. What does he do?

He makes you imitate 'TV Puppet Pals'.

Now, let's say you run with the Marvel characters and you piss the Hulk off. What does he do?

HE RAPES YOU UP THE ASS UNTIL YOU DIE!!!!

Seriously, vote for the Justice Friends to come out victorious, just for the safety of your poor colon. Owie...

Happy 500.

500 page views. Quite the turnout, considering i've been here for what- a year so far?

...yes, i'm well aware my page views are at 1000. I'm just convinced half of them are from myself.

Not much else to say here. Still writing. Should have chapter 12 up sooner or later. Maybe i'll start putting up character files.

Alright, i'm a semi-washed up fanfiction writer who is involved with big projects that are meant to get me onto an honest working schedule...CRAP. I rarely even update this account to begin with!

Just a few links to showcase where you can find my works:

You'll find my works on the last site in the fanfiction section- I imagine I lost my mantle as the King of CDD fanfiction though.

You can ask me to give an honest appraisal of my works, but you'll find them equivalent to a 21 year old guy beating the living crap out of a 15-19 year old teenager. I don't do self-appreciation well at ALL.

...oh right, the projects. They go as follows:

His Majesty's Secret Service: 2007 and beyond.

Alright, I've designated this as a quote-unquote, 'Frigging Fanwanking Retcon.' And you can feel free to call it 'Pissing on the ashes of burned Archie Comics.'

But seriously, the stories themselves start off just after the events of an Endgame that differed in most respects from what you saw in the comic- and that'll be handled in flashbacks. One of the more touchy subjects as far as the fandom will be concerned is that the main focus is NOT on Sonic or any of the Sega gang. As 'Secret Service' implies, this focuses on Geoffrey St. John, Hershey, and the rest that make up the Service. Not even this group is going to be exactly the way it was portrayed in the comics- characters may be adjusted for different capabilities or fates or even discarded from continuity and replaced with fanmade characters.

The IC 'Timeline' is planned to go from Issue 51 to before Issue 130. Heck, i'll supply you with character profiles and other tidbits in my journals as an excuse for me to update them on a regular basis.

Cats Don't Dance 10th Anniversary Project:

Sometime in 2007, this Animated Feature will be ten years old, and several people have no doubt started work on several projects to commemorate this moment in history. My intentions are rather grandoise, and will probably set me up for a major fall, but what the heck.

You've noticed most 'True' stories turned into Hollywood films don't stay completely and totally true to what happened, whether for dramatic reasons or otherwise. If CDD was indeed a real Hollywood film depecting real life events, undoubtedly it would be the same. So my project entails numerous 'Articles' about the REAL story behind Cats Don't Dance, from the characters to the incidents and even the entirely ficticious things that were made exclusively for the movie. Along the way, you'll get acquainted with the 'actors' and other 'crewmembers' who had a hand in making this film and what went on behind the scenes.

Beyond those two major undertakings, there is nothing else on my work slate.
